Dimroth Coil Condenser Borosilicate Glass
The Dimroth is the condenser of choice when condensing efficiency must be high and space in the assembly is limited. The internal coil runs the full length of the body, multiplying the contact surface between vapour and cooling water compared to ball or Allihn designs.
Why the Dimroth over other condensers
In extended reflux with volatile solvents—acetone, diethyl ether, dichloromethane—a standard ball condenser is often insufficient. The Dimroth coil retains vapour over a longer path and condenses it before it reaches the atmosphere. Less product loss, less solvent vapour exposure in the laboratory.
- Heat exchange surface: Greater than ball and Allihn condensers of equivalent size
- Water circulation: Inlet and outlet at the top of the coil
- Material: Borosilicate 3.3 glass
- Primary use: Reflux and distillation with volatile solvents
Typical applications
Prolonged reflux reactions, fractional distillations where solvent recovery is the priority, organic synthesis with low-boiling compounds. Also used in continuous extraction set-ups.
Standard in organic chemistry, pharmaceutical, synthesis, and quality control laboratories.
Assembly and installation
Mounted vertically above the flask or column. Cold water connects at the lower coil port; outlet at the upper port—counter-current flow relative to rising vapour for maximum efficiency. Standardised ground glass joint at the lower end for direct connection to a flask, Vigreux column, or distillation head.
