Rappaport Vassiliadis Soya Broth (RVS) BAC
Liquid selective enrichment medium for the detection and identification of Salmonella spp. The Vassiliadis formulation uses soya peptone as the nitrogen source, combined with malachite green and magnesium chloride to suppress competing microbiota.
Intended Use
Pre-plating enrichment of Salmonella prior to streaking onto selective agar, from food, water, surface swab and clinical samples. Integral step in ISO food microbiology protocols.
Used in food quality control laboratories, environmental health and clinical microbiology.
Medium Characteristics
- Nitrogen source:Soya peptone
- Selective agents:Malachite green and magnesium chloride
- Incubation temperature:41.5 °C
- Incubation time:18–24 hours
- Format:BAC, ready to use
- Target organism:Salmonella spp.
Advantages of the BAC Format
No weighing, no preparation, no autoclave. Open and use directly. Eliminates preparation errors and ensures batch-to-batch reproducibility—particularly useful at low sample throughput.
Workflow Integration
Inoculate the RVS broth following pre-enrichment in buffered peptone water. Incubate at 41.5 °C, then streak onto a selective-differential agar such as XLD or Rambach.
